Celtic have confirmed the signing of Cameron Carter-Vickers on loan from Tottenham Hotspur The Hoops looked to have finalised their transfer business after the signings of Giorgos Giakoumakis and Jota respectively. However, within minutes of the deadline, Celtic have confirmed the addition of the Spurs defender. Celtic have stated that the loan deal also contains…

Stoked to get this guy in, the Spurs fans I know rate him & didn’t want him to go, just one of those players that isn’t quite at the level he needs to be to be starting for Spurs, will do a job for us I’m certain.

This move most likely spells the end of Stephen Welsh’s career at Celtic  We just lost Hjelde and now we go and replace Welsh with a loan signing.

No pathway for promising young players at Celtic.

Not necessarily Gaius. We need cover for that position due to number of games we will play and the possibility of injuries. I don’t think Welsh will disappear. He has already proved to some extent he can play left or right of centre so I think he will continue to get games and to develop. Moreover, I think Ange has seen enough to know that he is an asset.

Hopefully so but it just reminds me of Eoghan O’Connell who also came through the Celtic academy and was starting to make a name for himself in the first team.

We signed players like Marvin Compper, Kolo Toure, Filip Benkovic and Jack Hendry which spelt the end of Eoghan O’Connell’s career at Celtic.

It would have been great to see Leo Hjelde breaking into the first team. Unfortunately he didn’t even stand a chance with the likes of Bitton, Urhoghide, Shaw, Murray and even Scales ahead of him.

I see Welsh as our number 1 CB, I’d be more inclined to think Jullien’s spot on the roster is the main one at threat, if he can’t get fit & stay fit he may be the one most like to slip into a non playing role.

Think big Cam joined us cos he didn’t fancy the Europa Conference League this year and would prefer to push himself in the far more appealing Europa League with us :four_leaf_clover:

Not really seen him but hopefully a dominant centre back.

None of the current two central defenders will be left behind. We needed a bit of depth, now it looks like we have it.

It will hopefully mean we won’t get dominated at set plays ( latest example Sunday).

Looks like a great signing… HH

If anything he should be taking Starfelts starting place

At last a ch who can head the ball plenty opportunities for walsh starfelt julien and vickers to establish best combinations

I wanted CCV and he’s here, let’s put it simply if CCV was playing on Sunday, Helander gets nowhere near that cross. Simple.

I think Welsh is firmly in place as a first teamer, him , Chris, Starfelt, CCV with young Dane, Uz, Liam what’s not to like ?

Centre defence is one area of the team you very rarely see rotation or substitutions. Leo Hjelde was 7th or 8th choice with no hope of breaking into the first team. Yet the fans are calling for more defenders to be signed?!

Look what happened to Luca Connell in midfield and Patryk Klimala up front. Sometimes too many players for one position can be a bad thing. What message does this send out to our academy players when the likes of Hjelde and Okoflex are having to move to English Premier League clubs for better opportunities?!

I agree. But that was under a different regime. Ange has thrown in new signings at will. I think that’s in part because with the best will in the world he can’t possibly be expected to know all the players he has at his disposal.
Hjelde being one who I thought was Ajer mark 2+
Compare and contrast, CCV , Jota

I will get 100% behind CCV and hope he turns out to be a great defender. Also trust that young and upcoming players will stand a better chance under Ange. Just when you see us with too much depth you can’t help but think who will have the same fate as Hjelde:

  1. Carl Starfelt
  2. Christopher Jullien
  3. Cameron Carter-Vickers
  4. Stephen Welsh
  5. Nir Bitton
  6. Liam Scales
  7. Osaze Urhoghide
  8. Dane Murray
  9. Liam Shaw

From my coaching days non Scots players struggle with anything but grass pitches. The bulk of our new arrivals should be fine. Anyone on here remember thi first generation pitch at Helenvale ?? I lost many a layer of skin
