Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell has refuted the suggestion that the club board are ‘asleep at the wheel’. In reference to a famous banner that fan group The Green Brigade unfurled last year, the Parkhead chief does not believe that the club can be accused of complacency. As quoted by The Daily Record, Lawwell said…

Its an unfortunate fact of life that our progression or otherwise has to be measured against that of Sevco. We have to accept that since Gerrard arrived they have improved whilst we have gone backwards. They are long odds on to win the league and in the last 2 years have dominated the Old Firm fixture. It was only thanks to the Great Wall that we won the Betfred Cup and Sevco may well win it this year. They have outperformed us in Europe to the extent we are now dependant on them for coefficent points. All this when we have spent £35million. Where to from here?

PL and DD cannot be faulted for the money spent on transfers (with the exception of the McGinn transfer saga) but as BR proved when you invest in high quality coaching staff you improve players performances which lead to higher transfer fee returns. Also the boards business model of buying low and selling high only works when the players perform well in europe (not scotland) and to do that you need high quality coaching staff. In NL defence he is saddled with a backroom staff selected by PL.
