Ange Postecoglou is already a massive fan of Celtic captain Callum McGregor. Who wouldn’t be? The Scotland international is a manager’s dream. Adaptable tactically, second to none for effort and application, and metronomic in possession. The central midfielder offers so much to the club. But the manager insists, good as he is, there’s more to…
Been saying it for a wee while now that McGregor is key to what Postecoglou is trying to achieve at Celtic.
It’s not just his ability from deep and the effect this has on us moving it from back to front with pace and purpose but also the fact he is always available for the out ball from defence which in turn takes the pressure off the back line when teams invariably push up and press.
It’s also McGregors leading by example by going from whistle to whistle, game after game regardless of his own personal form ( which on the whole is consistently high ) McGregor like the man he’s replaced sets the example for others to follow and or try to match.
Seldom will you see McGregor lunge in to a tackle or lose possession cheaply?
Each pass is a measured decision and often that pass choice has already been decided by the time he receives the ball ,this is the hallmark of any good Regista.
His head is constantly on the swivel even out of possession as he is reading the game and where he can impact it most.
You cannot teach that in Football this is a natural aspect to his game and something that Postecoglou obviously feels he can develop even further.
McGregor stated a while ago he watches the likes of Verratti and Xavi previously so it’s obvious where he sees himself as a player.
It’s a very demanding role and a lot can hinge on them in that role.
There are very few true Registas in the game at present and so he’s a very, very valuable asset to our Club.
Probably the most valuable asset.
I think young Robertson is being groomed into this role at Celtic as part of more longer term planning at the Club.
Put it this way to go out and attempt to replace a McGregor/Regista in the current market you would be looking well beyond our usual limits on spending at the Club.
It makes more sense to produce it in house as we have with McGregor.
However the basic building blocks have to be there and I think with Robertson they clearly are.
