Chris Sutton delivers instant verdict on Celtic defeat vs Betis; picks one player out

Originally published at: Chris Sutton delivers instant verdict on Celtic defeat vs Betis

Like most supporters, former Celtic hero Chris Sutton was taking positives and negatives away from tonight’s Europa League defeat against Real Betis. In summary, the Bhoys were very good on the ball and very poor off it. Tom Rogic and Jota were particularly impressive while attacker Albian Ajeti scored his third goal in two games.…

Congratulations to all the Celtic Bhoys, what a fantastic effort.
Anybody who whinges about any aspect of that marvellous display, away from home, against a very talented opposition, isn’t being fair dinkum.

Let me try……

We all love the front foot football of course we do. We appreciate that the team is new and we were decimated through injury.

Here it comes…… however……if we continue to give away very soft goals we won’t be winning any trophies

If we continue to give away very soft goals we won’t be winning anything. Well said. I was watching in a pub in Weymouth and the bloke across the room was watching West Ham. He couldn’t believe we chucked away a two goal lead. Who the hell was Ismaila marking when their keeper threw the ball out for their, i think their third goal. No one . He let the guy have it . Another goal came from a corner which should never have been if our centre halves had talked to each other… I thought that Sorro struggled at times and showed his inexperience. James Mc Carthy should have started. It is difficult playing with two good players like Turnbull and Rogic in the same team. For me it should be our captain plus McCarthy plus Turnbull in a midfield three. We should have at least drawn but they knew they could score against us even when they were two down.

I’m proud of the Bhoys tonight, what we could achieve with a full squad.

John, it’s the same as last season for me? How can you play 3 #10’s in a game? Then tonight it’s 2 #10’s and still lose? At least they tried tonight, unlike last season.

What makes you think that J. Personally i thought we were a bit unlucky in our own box. Yeah we gave to much space on the wings in fullback areas but its Angeball, enjoy the ride m8t. 3 goals in Spain hmmm.

2 nil up could have been 3 nil concede 2 quick goals then go 4 2 down score a late consolation goal. Reminded me of the alkmaar game. Another glorious failure to add to our list. AP way of playing football is great to watch if we had top strikers scoring 4/5/6 a game for us but we are fast becoming a novelty act providing great entertainment for the neutrals but no cigar for the fans.

Ange made a mistake playing Soro tonight. He’s pretty poor and looked lost tonight. Cost us dearly. Things won’t improve defensively ‘til we get another couple of experienced defensive midfielders. We’ll need to wait ‘til January though. But that will sort things out.

Said the same thing to my mate after it got to 2-2 simply not good enough defensively and it’s been like this for some time. We need to hire an experienced defensive coordinator type. What is big Johann Mjyalby doing these days or Joos or Bobo or even Alan Stubb’s ?

Losing four goals is not ideal and the defending does and will need to improve, away from home with a few top players out doesn’t help, Jota looked hot and Ajeti has hit a run of form, of course they can’t keep making the same old excuses, it will get better. Somebody along the line is going to get a right doing.

I can take positives BUT They figured out there was a weak link at left back and went for it. Look at their goals down our left young montgomerie seemed to be left as last man perhaps because Juranovic is a right back? SCALES we hear is an accomplished left back. Hes 24 and has just played in european qualifuers time to put him in Id say

I’d agree with that, hope Scales starts on Sunday.

I’m not on to defend Soro…he was really poor tonight…BUT…
When we were first linked with him I searched out videos of him…and the way he was playing in theses vids…bears no resemblance to the job he’s being asked to do for us.
He was a forward going mid-fielder who scored a fair few goals.
He obviously lacks "tackling skills " but that’s what we’re asking him to do…and he’s not good at it.
Just saying.

The defence is rubbish and the man 2 blame is the boards favourite spy Kennedy the sooner ANGE realises that then maybe he will push him oot the door

i said it last season and i will repeat it again after last night Sorro is now where near the standard required to play as a controlling midfielder for our first team we had supporters clutching at straws last season looking for positives and claiming he was Browns replacement.
we played after the 8th minute with 10 men for 50 minutes until he was replaced as his stupid constant fouling made him a waste of a jersey. something he does in every match he plays.
i don’t wish to spoil the great effort and attacking style of entertaining football we played but i would have replaced him at half time he was that ineffective.
i do believe Anje know and is finding out about his players i remember when Martin O Neil had success his policy was you are allowed to make a mistake but you wont play if its repeated repeatably.

one of the best defenders we brought to he club in my time was big Paul Elliot and he took time and a few games to settle i think our centre backs will improve i worry more who anchors in front of them as holding midfielder and also left sided defending midfielder. Turnbull switches off totally when defending behind him in our last third and even last night should have headed for a corner at their 4th goal inside of back into the box.
we could have boosted the squad for say 3.5 million signing McCann and Mc Grath

Thank god I’m not the only one that thought that about the 4th goal, it’s one of the first things they teach you at the most basic of levels. If you don’t know what’s behind you play it to safety, in Turnbull’s case just nod it out for another corner. I was fuming watching the replay of that, he nods a weak tepid header to the edge of the box & then after it’s been put in our net he throws his hands up & looks around at everybody as if to say “why didn’t anybody shut him down”, wouldn’t of needed to be shut down if he’d of played safe.

Soro’s first touch was giving me the s**ts too, it seems 50/50 every time as to whether or not he’ll bring the ball under control. I know Bitton gets a hard time but he’s far more assured as a DM than he is at CB, the only problem with playing Bitton in that set up (with Rogic & Turnbull) is that we’d basically be lining up the slowest midfield in European football. We needed some pace in there, I was really hoping Ange would’ve given Ewan Henderson a hit out after an hour or so, at that stage I’d of happily had Turnbull off to give Ewan the run, see what some legs can do with 30mins to go.

Ironically not many of us would have said NO to a deficit of one goal away from home against RB especially with the team we had to put out …

Coukd be significant in getting into the top 2 spots…

However the expectation of a lot if fans will now be that we will gub them in Glasgow …

I would not be to sure … maybe if …we play our best …

As well as we played in the first 30 RB almost never turned up …

Celtic coukd have been 3 up and I am sure the result would have been different…

As some of you have noticed I have not as yet jumped on to the Ange brigade, but I can see a lot of positives … The problem is it is sadly balanced with 59% negatives …

He is trying to play the Liverpool way but sadly we no longer have a VvD at the back …any longer …

Will be a tough one at LIVY …
