BBC pundit and former Hearts boss Craig Levein has lauded the performance of Callum McGregor in Scotland’s 2-0 win against Denmark last night. McGregor was a key cog in Steve Clarke’s engine room as Scotland overcame World Cup-bound Denmark to book a home tie in the playoff semi-finals in March. The Celtic fans were quick…
Things you don’t see everyday! Fair play to Levein, Calumn is very pivotal when you look at it. Total home grown pro who must have a massive value by now.
I think there are a great many who comment on McGregor who don’t seem to understand the role he has at the Club?
His job is to affect the game from a much deeper position as a playmaker much as the great Pirlo did for Milan and Juve ,as Xavi did for Barca and as Verratti does at present with PSG.
He’s asked to do more defensive work when he’s played on his own behind two more attack minded Midfielders but less so when deployed in a double pivot alongside a Scott Brown or Bitton as the case has been recently.
The reason I continually harp on about this is to stop the confusion for the fact is McGregor hasn’t been operating as a traditional attacking Midfielder now for several Seasons.
The reason he is in there is fairly straightforward.
He has the skill and in game nouse to link the play between defence and attack through both his impeccable positional awareness coupled with the ability to pick the right pass in order to get it forward as quickly and effectively as possible.
He’s constantly finding space even when it appears there is none and his head is on the swivel picking the pass before he’s even received the ball.
You can’t teach a player this, this comes naturally to players like him.
Few players can do this job to a high level in modern Football these guys are few and far between and hence why it is imperative we look after him if Ange is to take us forward in the style he wants and demands.
Clarke would be a fool not to utilise McGregor in the same way.
I think the 3-4-3 Clarke is using McGregor in for Scotland would work just as well at Celtic with the players we now have at our disposal and McGregor would be key in that again.
He’s a quality operator McGregor by far the best midfielder in Scotland.
Arguably the best Scottish Midfielder in Football at present.
I read that, good explanation. He’s a bit unsung I think. Really hope he gets a massive role at Parkheid.
A think the captain o Celtic is a massive role bud. HH
If you were to ask other midfielders he’s playing with or against I think they’d all say Calum is the best. He’s consistently excellent, by far and away the best in the country. He’s the guy who let’s McGinn ,Gilmour, Turnbull,Rogic etc do what they do. A total gem of a player. We’re very lucky to have him. Very.
Hail Hail.
