John Hartson believes the main priority for Celtic this January has to be the acquisition of new defenders. There has been an intense spotlight on the Celtic backline this season. That’s despite the fact the Hoops have conceded the same amount of goals in the league as rivals Rangers. Some high-profile mistakes have proven costly…
While I back big John on the statement about defenders pulling their socks up and realising who they are actually playing for, I think it’ll be hard to get those type of players in with the budget we have.
With that too, the style we are playing at the minute could be seen by some as rather gung-ho exposing the centre backs at times. For that reason I think, if we are to look at more defenders, we’d need guys with pace, stamina and a great understanding of the defensive game.
Domestic teams play on the counter against us while European teams give us a right go. Finding the perfect balance for solid consistent defensive displays would be ideal for everyone
Couldn’t agree more with harts on, who cares about only conceding the same amount of goals as rangers, starfelt makes bouncers and is caught out of position every game, he is lucky enough to get away with it in the spl but doesn’t in Europe, to talk about teething problems with him and vickers is nonsense sen, if they can’t sort out a better understanding after training together for several weeks then there’s something wrong with them or our coaching.
The defence will not get better until we get a proper defensive coach in, simple.
