It wouldn’t be a bright, fresh spring morning without the latest Eddie Howe to Celtic chat for you. I know, it’s a saga that’s dragged on longer than many people would have liked. However, we can keep track of the situation by listening to what certain journalists and football figures are saying about it all.…
This still worries me a bit because of the amount the Howe is staking on it and his demands. If Hughes comes in, that’s great but he should be head of recruitment, to work alongside Howe. Harkin…if we were 90 percent there, it’s not going to do our standing with Man City or in general any good if we break it off because the new manager doesn’t want to work with him. He’s not going to be too co-operative in future. Or McKay as the new boss has the power to appoint who he sees fit (alongside Desmond) and if he wants Harkin in, then Howe understands this is a separate appointment from head of recruitment. That would be the ideal scenario. We’re probably waiting on Hughes and Howe being freed up as Gannon says but I think we should still have a DoF in place that’s chosen by Desmond and McKay, not Howe. Otherwise, if he doesn’t work out, where does that leave our rebuild? That’s the whole point with this, even if a manager walks at any point, there is continuity and to do that the DoF has to be a club appointment not a manager one
For a guy whose claim to fame is getting and keeping Bournemouth in premiership for a few seasons his insistence on Hughes as DOF (if true) is bemusing. If Howe was to do a good job he would probably be top of list for many premiership clubs so his stay at Celtic will probably be short term hence your left with the problem of Richard Hughes following him out the door. The DOF cannot be part of EH backroom staff but celtic will probably find a position for him but I suspect celtic will make EH compromise on finding room for Kennedy and Stracnan among his coaching staff(God I hope not). There again why not employ a top coach with his own coaching team and a separate DOF but that’s too simple NOT THE CELTIC WAY UNDER THE CURRENT BOARDS WATCH.
