Just for sake of clarity, we are pro-Kristoffer Ajer on this website. That’s important to state. The battle lines are drawn within the Celtic support over the likeable centre-back. For some, he’s a tidy ball-playing centre-back with massive potential. Others, though, think he’s an overrated liability, who can’t defend set-pieces. There’s truth in both sides.…
It’s interesting the pot-shots that Solbakken took at Ajer having to move to a bigger club when the other defenders he selected play for the likes of Galatasaray, AZ, Nîmes, Toulouse, Union Berlin, Rostov, Ural, Molde, Bodø/Glimt and Coventry (on loan from Brighton). One could (and in my estimation, should) argue that of that current group, Ajer plays for the biggest club, depending on how Galatasaray is viewed.
What would “development” in his eyes mean? Being a part of a cup squad for a top-6 premiership side? Fighting for starts at an Italian club? I think big Kris is obviously destined for big things, but to discount Celtic as a place to develop further shows a little naïveté.
That being said…they (Solbakken included) have to teach the boy how to defend a corner.
Well put, Celtic are not the first team to struggle and while some on the continent are dismissive of Scottish Football apart from Spain, Germany, France,Italy, England and just maybe The Netherlands most others are comparable. EUFA’s own coefficient reflects our standing.
