We’ve already seen Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou as Santa, sorting out Christmas Dinner for some of the players in the festive advert. He’s already given us a huge change in momentum. Genuine optimism. Not only that, an early trophy, and Kyogo Furuhashi. We couldn’t ask for much more from Ange. But the world delivered. South…
Pity that South Melbourne isn’t a part of the A-League.
South is a real football club, built on the values of tradition, community and culture.
Instead the A-League (a 30% stake of which was recently flogged off the a US private equity firm) sells ‘licences’ for ‘franchises’ to soulless corporate entities, who are devoid of any semblance of tradition, community or culture. An example is Western United, based in Melbourne’s growing western outskirts. The ‘club’ is owned by a group of property developers, whose sole aim is to extract financial reward for its directors through a cynical attempt to appear engaged in the game. Like other A-League franchises, such entities are nothing more than empty plastic corporate vessels sans any historical link to football and any meaningful attraction to football’s traditional supporters in Australia.
Yes I’m grizzled old socialist and football traditionalist, but the A-League will never take my fancy so long as real football clubs like South, Melbourne Knights, Sydney Olympic, Wollongong Wolves, Sydney United etc are left to rot in the dark by the faceless corporate dickheads running the game in Australia.
