There were plenty of standouts for Celtic against AZ Alkmaar tonight, but the man who deserves a special mention is none other than Stephen Welsh. Welsh broke into the Celtic squad last season. However, there were plenty of chinks in his armour. Many went into pre-season this summer believing he was one of the players…
Yet many of the fans want us to bring in another central defender which would make Welsh fourth choice once Jullien is back.
Leo Hjelde is currently seventh or eighth choice behind the likes of Bitton, Urhoghide and Murray. No wonder he wants to leave!
I’d rate Welsh as our current number 1 CB tbh, Starfelt just doesn’t inspire confidence, looking forward to seeing what Liam Scales has to offer should he come onboard
I’m hoping Scales can play LB or LWB. When Julien is back I think we’ll be solid at the CB position.
Not overly sold on Big Chris if I’m honest mate, he’s impressive physically but not as imposing as he should be for a lad his size, plus I think he may take some time to come back up to match speed. Of course there’s no guarantee of any player staying injury free but he seems to have taken a liking to the Lennoxtown physio’s table
Let’s hope Welsh can play as well in the away leg as with the rest of the guys.
The team are buzzing playing with crowds at Parkhead, I think we’ll see the true element of progress if we can do an honest job in the return leg and put AZ out.
Starfelt still needs to get up to speed with our game, I know we can’t wait forever though. If I was Ange, I’d still be investing and in cover all over the backline.
Last thing we want is Bitton in at the back for big games
