Originally published at: Steve Clarke's blunder as Scotland labour without Celtic man McGregor
So, earlier we said Celtic captain Callum McGregor being rested for Scotland against the Faroe Islands was a good thing. That was predicated on a couple of variables. 1. That Scotland would easily beat a team ranked lower than North Korea [FIFA]. 2. That the Scotland midfield would purr along without him. As it turned…
Hopefully his omission was due to AP demanding his players are not physically run into the ground by the international manager……
No Celtic players starting but 4 ex Celtic men in the line up and if you add Robertson and Nisbet who were youth players plus McGinn who should have been a Celtic player then there was still a big Celtic connection in the match.
With no Rangers players it is obvious the press will highlight Gilmour as our top man as an ex ranger while McGregor who was outstanding against England Austria and Israel goes un noticed but it clearly showed last night how much he is missed in Clarkes system.
Celtic will benefit from Cal not running around 90 minutes on a plastic pitch but it did show that when McGinn cant plank his big ass over the ball and sink his body into the ground he is non effective on astro turf.
Let’s not kid ourselves on here. If it wasn’t for the fact that the current Scotland team is littered with talent, Clarke would be out a job as he’s inept of recognising the strongest team with players playing in their natural and best position. Delighted that we got a result, but Clarke is living of other peoples talent and will to win. Never in International football history has it been easier to qualify, but Clarke is still making hard work of it, and but for the skill, determination & professionalism of the players, we wouldn’t have seen the Euros nor would we be in contention for the WC play offs.
