Celtic guaranteed themselves European football after Christmas with a win over Ferencvaros tonight, and what a feather that is in Ange Postecoglou’s cap. Consider the rhetoric at the start of the season: they said it would be a miracle if we got into the Europa League. We had no chance of doing anything in Europe,…
Would we be saying Leverkusen were streets ahead of us if the score had been 5 -4 for them as Kyogo could easily have scored 4 goals that night and we missed a penalty.
Football is always easier when you have a cushion and get ahead yes they are a top outfit but from the middle to front we matched them at Celtic park and even he german press highlighted it was never a 4-0 win in terms of play
Totally agree Hugh. At the end of last season and throughout the Howe saga I worried that this was another dark time in the wilderness pre Fergus. Yes I was a Hampden season ticket holder and still traumatisesed. But the difference is I can see a brighter future, Ange is still new in the door but already the style of play is to my liking, the Celtic way.
The misses on the night have largely been ignored (especially on ACSOM where the revisionism is we were totally outplayed and battered) as that game could just have easily have ended a high scoring draw on the night with better finishing from Kyogo.
Informed supporters know that a result often isn’t a true reflection of a game but for some the result is all that matters.
In every game we have looked like conceding a goal but the fact of the matter is we have also looked like scoring plenty too and have on the whole maintained the bulk of possession in all the games so far so there are plenty positives to be drawn from every game.
To be scoring 3 goals away in Europe in any game is a sure sign we are headed in the right direction all we need to do is defend better and the results will as last night shows come.
Absolutely mate. We have scored three goals in two consecutive away matches against very decent European sides. When was the last time that happened? In fact, has it ever happened? Even in big Jock’s heyday, I’m not sure it did.
