Celtic confirmed the signing of Liam Shaw last night [Daily Record]. A couple of issues emerge here. First, the negative: Neil Lennon is continuing to sign players, hinting that he might be here beyond the summer. Given how the 20-21 campaign has gone, that’s maybe not the best scenario. However, the club have shown real…
How are you feeling about the signing of Liam Shaw?
Does he represent a “project” that Celtic don’t need, or is he a really astute pick-up?
A few things:
-
I really don’t want to count my chickens until there’s confirmation he’s signed. I don’t want another Ben Davies saga.
-
I think it means there’s going to be a midfield exodus: Brown, Ntcham, Christie, Bitton, and Rogic will be gone in the summer.
-
He’s a midfielder who’s played a few times at CB. The next Bitton!
-
Seriously though. Looks like he could be first team ready.
Again, as I’ve asked on another thread, ’ On whose behalf are these players being signed and why?" Is this confirmation that the board are going to continue to ignore the concerns and pleas from the fans? Are the board really preparing to go to war with their own supporters (leading up to season ticket renewals) in a deluded attempt to try and prove some sort of deluded point, a point being made out of pettiness, disdain, hatred and contempt for their own fans, that they were right to keep Lennon in a job that he’s spectacularly failed to do
I’m trying to view this signing as one that fits with following the club’s ethos around development and not necessarily following with the manager’s directives. Shaw is clearly a talented prospect that many managers would earmark as a target for their squad and one that having in place does no harm to a potential incoming manager. It’s a signing with prospect and with such little cost in the grand scheme of football, I don’t see it throwing a stick in the spokes of any future plans.
Even if he doesn’t end up making the grade (by all accounts I’ve seen, he looks up for it), these are the type of moves the club has to be positive and proactive in making, especially since domestic scouting and recruitment is only going to continue to become even more competitive. I’m choosing to believe (or cross my fingers and hope) that this move wasn’t dependent on Lennon’s input.
