Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths is amongst those fighting for Neil Lennon’s favour. The Scotland international and Bhoys mainstay has struggled over recent seasons. In fact, over the last few weeks alone, his attitude and performances have been cause for concern. The Celtic boss dropped Griffiths against Kilmarnock last Tuesday [Scottish Sun], in a season which…
Leigh Griffiths: keep or let go?
I really think there’s better value for money elsewhere. Plus he’s in the downhill of his career.
His off-field problems are going to be a more risky bet as he’ll be injured longer or will take longer to get fit.
Leigh Griffiths is at Celtic solely because he’s a goalscorer. However, he hasn’t scored any more than 18 goals in a season at any point in the last five seasons. That’s going all the way back to that famous 40-goal season under Deila. This year he’s bagged seven I believed. He signed his new contract back in 2018. There is no way on earth he deserves a new deal given his record in that period. This season has been disastrous from him in my opinion. He’s had his chances and we needed him to turn up this year. He hasn’t. Goodbye Leigh in my view - it’s time to find a new goalscorer and one that will do the business for us consistently.
EDIT: Also, I’m fully aware of everything Griffiths has gone through and that has undoubtedly affected some of these numbers. But no new contract should be given on sentiment alone. He’s still underperformed and has done for too long now.
David, I wish I could agree with any of the above yourself, StrangeAttractions or even Euans keep or let go. For me, it’s KEEP. When sitting on a bench for so long due to the MANAGER only playing one or none, how can Leigh score? Not one of you guy’s have even thought or mentioned that one? Sorry but he should always be #1, then someone else. Problems aside, he is better than two of the others 100%. Not just saying this due to connections with the wee man, I’m saying it cause it’s true. If we could get better value for money elsewhere? Last season it was the high scoring now a Dundee United failure. Hard yes but there it is. Or we were going for the young player who scored 20 in a season elsewhere? 20 Isn’t enough for Celtic, then again Eddy up front on his own wasn’t too great. Yes were playing two now and his total so far is 16 Ouch.
David, Celtic’s biggest midfield problem since b4 Ryan turned up is not passing to strikers but row z. Or on the odd occasion hitting the frame or even net.
That’s a fair point but he wasn’t deemed match fit until December. That’s unprofessional.
However, his lack of fitness could be just another sign of Lennon being in over his head. I want another manager in NOW so that can assess Griff for himself.
The not being fit enough was for on the field fit, and ye canny get that without being on the field Leigh said.
True. He gets significantly sharper with game time and his striker instinct is unparalleled at the club but he was reported to be overweight at the beginning of the season and I saw plenty of Tik-Toks where Griff was drinking takeaway cocktails.
I want him to become the 40 goal striker we all know he’s capable of being. New manager might be the only way to do that.
Everything’s crossed from me on that one.
Partially true.
Footballing world is a good barometer of players… All these years at Celtic no media mention of big money moves , no teams showing any interest in him ,
And Considering how much tallent we have shipped to the EPL …and made a tidy profit, why , no mention of Griff,
Yes he is a Goal scorer ,but due to his unprofessional approach as a Celtic representative, Who else would touch him .
Great deliver on set pieces ,free kicks at times sublime, If I was him I would be wanting to be around the goal mouth at corners not taking them, another failing by Lennon .
Has he been managed properly, fairly …dont think so …Another LENNYISM

I’ve never been able to understand that one, and up stands Griffiths to take wait for it, wait for it, he sends in the corner and it’s in row b from the defender for another corner? Can’t most times even beat the first man let alone find a Celtic head? Griffiths leaps like a salmon and the balls into the back of the net for his and Celtics third goal from a corner. Nah never heard that either.
