There could be more Celtic board room drama on the way after Dom McKay’s shock resignation, according to a report. Yesterday, sensational news emerged from Celtic Park, with Dom McKay resigning from his post after 71 days in charge. Of course, the conspiracy rumours have begun in earnest, despite Celtic citing “personal reasons” for McKay’s…
My initial thoughts on his appointment was that Dermot Desmond had merely installed a place man / yes man in control.
Lawwell had been given too much rope and power and in the end DD had had enough.
McKay came in thinking he was in total control of matters but no sooner had he came in Dermot Desmond announced he was getting directly involved in Transfers this Summer so as to avoid the usual Lawwell type disasters when it came to getting them done.
I believe this put McKay’s nose was pushed well out of joint as he realised he wasn’t fully entrusted in getting them done.
He’s a salesman from Rugby after all not a hardened negotiator of Football Transfer dealings.
The problem at Celtic is Dermot Desmond in my opinion and until that problem is resolved we will never achieve our full potential as a Club.
In order to do so I believe we need to follow the German model of 50+1 Fan Ownership combined with External Investment.
When Fergus McCann left Celtic he should have done what Ann Budge did at Hearts and facilitated Fan Ownership by taking a hit on the vast fortune he made from selling his controlling Share to Desmond.
He walked with £40m but could as easily left with £20m leaving Supporters in control of Celtics future.
He chose to capitalise fully on his investment and so left the door wide open for others to follow.
Which of course they have ever since.
It is my firm belief that had he done so we would not have put up with any of the recent developments we have seen unfold since then from Rangers cheating for a decade to Celtic allowing the 5 Way Agreement to undermine the Integrity of the entire ■■■■ show in Scotland.
Celtic had/has the potential to be so much more than what it has become.
What it has become is a train set for an absentee landlord and a pension pot for Investors who clearly do not give a damn for what Supporters think.
Charlie is that you that Saiz that?
This is yet another huge embarrassment for the club. I still believe the stench of Lawwell is hanging about the club and don’t be surprised if yet another of his patsies, Nicholson, gets the gig permanently. I thought McKay would modernise the club but no doubt Desmond and the other dinosaurs on the board clearly do not want to. I despise the lot of them and the sooner they all leave the club the better. I hope the truth comes out but truth and the Celtic board are not good partners.
I think you’re being hugely unfair on Fergus. The man saved us from the brink and earned every coin he made from his investment IMO.
No CEO leaves a position with an explanation of being useless or didn’t fit, unless it’s Enron or similar. The personal reason story is exactly that, a story. I’ve been told exactly what happened from a a well placed source. It’s never going to be explained in the public domain, but anything you hear about Lawwell being involved in any way directly or indirectly is complete nonsense.
Dom done good by the club in his short tenure and should be applauded, but let’s not get carried away and start a media feeding frenzy as this is exactly what the SMSM would love, as would our nasty neighbours. What happens at boardroom level should stay in the boardroom and all our energies should be concentrated is supporting big Ange & the team. The baying for blood & stories from above will only be detrimental to our club. Who does it matter who we have in, so long as they do the job and do good by the club & the supporters.
The window is closed and we have our players confirmed until January, so I would encourage supporters to put everything you have into supporting our great club and appreciating the magic on the park and leave the other stuff to the suits.
HAIL HAIL
KEEP THE FAITH:four_leaf_clover:
Unfair because I pointed out he walked from Celtic with a £40m profit in 5 years and the reason he did that he sold the bulk of his controlling shares to a like minded soul in Dermot Desmond who has ultimately overseen the biggest scandals to rock Scottish Football in decades and sat back and allowed Rangers to not only cheat for a decade but also claim those titles and come back from Liquidation as if nothing happened?
I’m not criticising McCann for what he done in regards saving Celtic from oblivion (from which Rangers would never have facilitated a return) or the fact he made a profit all I’m doing is pointing out that he was in a very good position of still doubling his money in 5 years and handing control of Celtic to those who care the most.
He did neither and as a result fully capitalised on making every penny he could.
Now we find ourselves in a position where like minded Capitalists are running Celtic for their own means first and foremost with the Support an afterthought that has to be placated now and then with a wee pat on the heid.
You have look beyond the romantic at the bigger picture bud otherwise they will simply keep doing it.
HH
As we’ll probably never know why he left …then I really don’t care why he left…I’ll leave that to the conspiracy theory experts.
My main concern is that once again the Club has made a huge mistake and confirms my thought that the Board are not fit for purpose.
The Eddie Howe debacle was bad enough…but this just tops it.
Something is obviously seriously wrong at Board level…but its been that way since 2012…and still they survive.
Will there be Board changes ?
I’m reaching a stage…where I don’t really care.
They have a support that they don’t deserve.
With the exception of Man City & PSG, I think you’ll find that all clubs are run as businesses and the romanticism is the thought that Fergus as a business man would just hand over £20.
I get your point, but don’t necessarily agree with it. Club ownership can also be with its faults and you only have to look to Barcelona to see the trouble they’re in just now. All the negativity aimed at the board (rightly or wrongly), won’t change anything other than feed the desperados we have disguising themselves as journalist. DD isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and will probably pass the baton to his son once he’s had enough, but like it or not, that’s where we’re at. What we don’t want or need is more protests outside the ground where it gets to the same point as last season when we had to put up barriers to protect our players & staff.
There’s already plenty of forums by so called Celtic minded people, demanding they get the truth and that they must answer to the hoards. Complete nonsense and no business would ever partake in such business publicly.
For what it’s worth, I was happy with Dom and how he went about his business. This is only a distraction that we could’ve done without, but I would rather see the supporters focus their energies on Ange and the team and not to feed the waiting SMSM.
People come and people go, but Celtic Football Club will be here forever:four_leaf_clover:
PS,
The shower over the other end must be loving this and will milk it for what they can to take the focus away from them and their racist in-house media, as well as the fact that they couldn’t sell a player and are struggling financially. The DR would appear have already dropped their campaign against them and no other outlets will touch it, so let’s not let them deviate and keep these matters at the forefront and not a change in the Celtic boardroom.
Good post …says it all.
Hail hail
Given the ages of some of them I’d say there are a couple due for retirement soon.
Dermot will sell up in the next couple of years I believe and my only hope is he at least gives Supporters the opportunity to take control of his shares.
Celtic can still be run as a Business whilst being controlled (50+1 model) by its Fanbase.
You achieve this by appointing the right men for the job and not by appointing men who are only interested in what the job can benefit them.
Take the Lawwell Bonus shenanigans in recent years as an example of how not to run as Successful a business as you can.
He went from a £500k Annual Wage plus a £400k Bonus to a £1m Wage plus a New Bonus linked directly to Champions League Qualification over a 3 year period resulting in a £3.5m wage in one Season.
You telling me the 50+1 Model as used in Germany would see that sort of Board Approved action going on?
What about the Res 12 and the now infamous 5 Way Agreement our Club setup conveniently ignored?
No chance a 50+1 Set up at Celtic would have voted any of these issues through.
Not a chance in hell they would have been ran out of Dodge at the first whiff of any of it.
I think Desmond is now at an age where selling up and retiring is a very real possibility.
What I would love to know is has anyone ever put the whole Fan Ownership thing before him?
Maybe it’s time the Fan Groups got together and asked the question?
You never know he might be the one who sees the merit in being the man in Celtics history who made it happen?
Its an interesting point you make.
I don’t know much about Fan ownership…but I doubt if DD would support that.
Isn’t it likely that his son will "take over " from him ?
As for me…I saw my first game at CP in 1958…Had a season ticket "off and on " for more than 40 years…and I gave it up last season as " a protest " about the Club’s handling of Res. 12…
Or should it be the LACK of handling Res. 12.
It was utterly shameful the way we colluded with that mob…and as I said before…
They have a support that they don’t deserve.
Hail hail.
Yer probably right about his son taking the reigns but unless he’s asked directly we will never know the answer to it.
Celtic would be transformed by the 50+1 model used widely in the German Top flight.
We are hamstrung by our setup.
I sent you a long…ish reply to your post…but I don’t see it…DOH !!
Hail hail.
