Celtic have ‘stepped down’ from transfer talks with Rubin Kazan for defender Carl Starfelt, prominent journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported tonight. Romano believes Celtic lodged a €5m (£4.27m) bid for the player earlier this week. However, talks are no longer progressing and Celtic have withdrawn. One of the reasons is with regards to Kristoffer Ajer,…

This is pure stupidity in my opinion.
Ajer clearly wants to leave so forcing him to run down his contract makes no sense, especially if that also means losing out on another 10-12m.

There’s no way we’d get 20m for him now, so why not take 10m and reinvest it on a 5m right back and 5m central defender who actually want to be here.

I was really hoping our transfer dealings would vastly improve this summer due to the urgent need to rebuild, but it appears we’re incapable of changing the way we do things!

I can’t understand the maths. We’ve already sold a number of players this year, and albeit we’re not drowning in cash, surely to goodness we can a) afford to splash £5m without having to sell first and then b) take £12m or whatever for Ajer without messing about at a critical time like this. It beggars belief.

Surely would make sense to sell a player who has said he wants to move on. If we can get £12 million with sell on clause then move him on and plough the money straight back in and get in a CM and RB

I get what you are saying but it will come down to wages too. Starfelt is on a heavy wedge in Russia and Celtic won’t want to add that to the wage bill when they will be getting more out of Ajer anyway (in the sense that he might be staying for the season).

However, I also agree. If Ajer wants away, let him and get a new body in.

Celtic had better pray that they did get 66 Thousand season tickets sold and not just 66. Because that’s how many may end up watching them play to stay in the bottom 4.

Yeah Jimmy - you make a lot of good points there but wouldn’t worry too much about the contract thing. Even Brendan Rodgers was on that initially before eventually signing a long-term deal.
